Totem Lights

'November 5th 2001 was an amazing night.  For some reason, according to University of Fairbanks scientists, a solar flare the day before, (on the 4th), produced a coronal mass ejection that stuck the Earth's magnetic field at about 5pm Alaska time.  I don't know what all that means but it looks really neat.  The aurora was an unusual bright red and seen as far south as Georgia and Alabama.  In Juneau we see the northern lights a lot but not this brilliant color red.  The normal lights are mostly green with maybe a hint of red but on this day it was mostly all red.

I made this shot near the University of Alaska southeast campus in Juneau.  It was just amazing.  The sky was so red it was almost scary.  I didn't know were to look.  It seemed that the next spot out did the last.  It was a very memorable night.'
