Pic of the week 1/24/01

'I was out on a boat trip looking for humpback whales this past fall.  We ran into a few that day.  This particular shot was kind of neat.  We were watching him about 150 yards away.  He was surfacing up for air and then down for about 6 min. each time.  This particular time he was down for a bit longer and then all of the sudden, right next to the boat, we saw the spout from the blow hole about 15 yards away!  We were totally surprised!  At the time I was using a 600mm lens because we were so far away from the whales.  A 600mm lens was way to big for this guy.  Luckily I had another camera around my neck and it had only a 105mm lens on it.  I barely got this picture because I wasn't expecting him to come in so close.  I guess he was curious.'
