Aah-nold!

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Pic of the week 03/08/01

"This photo isn't of Alaska but has something to do with Alaska, kinda.  Arnold Schwarzenegger attended the opening ceremonies for the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Anchorage, Alaska on March 4th, 2001.  He was one of the celebrities to kick off the week long event.  This was the first year the Winter Special Olympics held their games in Alaska.  It brought close to 10,000 athletes, coaches, volunteers, family members, honored guests, spectators, and media from countries around the world to the largest city in Alaska.  I was one of those people.  I took this particular photo at a U.S. Senate hearing on the Health Status and needs of Individuals with Mental Retardation that Arnold, among others, gave testimony at the day after the Opening Ceremonies took place.  Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska heard testimony from a handful people in the health and social service field, and some Special Olympic athletes.  The last to give testimony was Arnold, and Senator Stevens said, 'I guess we'll let Arnold terminate this program today', and so he did.  This was one of about a hundred shots I took of Arnold that weekend.  You'll probably see more of the Terminator in weeks to come.  Check again soon because, I'll be back, with more!"

Alaska fact: The Yukon River is the 3rd largest river in the United States.  It travels 1,875 of its 2,298 miles in Alaska.  Only the Mississippi River, and the Missouri River exceed it.
