Eagle Eye

Alaskan Bald Eagle-David Sheakley

pic of week 5/5/03

"Another day at work for me!  I went out to shoot a few eagles in the channel on Sunday and caught this one just as he caught dinner.  This eagle was high in sky (I don't know how high up he was but he was pretty high) saw a fish, zeroed in, swoop and bam! . .  nothing to it.  These eagles always amaze me.

One time I was out on a whale watch/shoot and saw an eagle flying over head.  It angled down and zoomed from the sky like a fighter pilot.  The eagle then splashed into the water at what looked like to be a regular dive for a fish.  This was no regular dive down and fly up, it was more like a dive and swim.  That's right swim!  After the eagle hit the water it was stuck.  I and others on the boat thought it was going to drown.  He was a good 100 yards from shore and started to do the breast stroke.  After close to ten minutes he reached the rocky shore and believe it or not had a salmon flopping around in his talons!  The fish was to big to carry out of the water but to good to let go so he hauled it all the way to shore.  Amazing.  I got the photos to prove it.  One day I'll post them up for your amazement."
