Glacier Walk

pic of the week 1/27/02

'I made this picture while hiking on top of  the Mendenhall glacier in Juneau last month.  I went up with the Alpine Club and a hand full of other hikers.  We had to strap spikes to our feet called crampons, that allowed us to walk on the glacier  without slipping.  This particular climber is jumping over a glacial crevasse that goes hundreds of feet down into the glacier.  Good thing he didn't slip.  You can see pieces of rock on the glacier behind the climber that was shredded off the surrounding mountains during its growth and movement.'
