Iditarod 2001

Pic of the week 03/14/01

"I took a trip to Anchorage to photograph the start of the Iditarod on March 3rd 2001.  It's a pretty big deal up there.  The start of the Iditarod was in downtown Anchorage on 4th street, in the middle of the street.  The night before the race they trucked in tons and tons of snow and dumped it in the street for the race.  The day of the Iditarod start, the street was packed with spectators.  This year there were 68 total mushers that competed, eight of which were woman.  This photo is of David Straub from Willow, Alaska going down 4th street in Anchorage.  Unfortunately, Straub scratched out of the race this year and will not finish.

This morning (3/14) at the finish in Nome, Doug Swingley of Lincoln, Montana, came in first place with a time of 9 days, 19 hours, 55 minutes.  It was Swingley's fourth victory over the 1,100-mile course trough the harsh Alaska wilderness.  Swingley won $62,857 and a new Dodge quad-cab pickup truck.  I had a lot of fun watching the start of the race.  You should go see it some year."
