Night Light

Wow!

pic o' the week 10/30/03

"This was one of those nights that was incredible.  The sky was dancing with a marvelous glow as the stars twinkled in the dark clear night.  There were bands of light shooting across the sky from North West to North East and everywhere in between.  This is a shot of many that I made on the night of October 29th, 2003 in Juneau.  A few days earlier the sun gave off a record level solar flare that lasted about three hours.  When big solar flares like that happen and hit earth the result is what's pictured above; a night full of light.  It's either solar flares or all the ghosts and goblins flying through the sky getting ready for Halloween tomorrow.  It's hard to say.  They both have the same kind of effect.  Either way it is amazing."

Alaskan Fact: The state of Alaska is so big It has to have two time zones.  Almost all of Alaska is in the Alaska Time Zone, which is one hour earlier that Pacific Time.  The western most Aleutian Islands and St. Lawrence Island are on Hawaii-Aleutian Time, two hours earlier than Pacific Time.
