 In Seine Salmon

pic of week 10/5/03

'I made this photo of a couple of Seine Boats (pronounced SANE) near Amalga harbor while I was fishing on shore about a month ago.   I didn't end up catching any thing but these guys netted hundreds of salmon.  The big boat lets out the seine net while the skiff has the other end of it.  The net floats on one end and sinks on the other.  The two boats leave the net in the water while salmon swim into it.  When they think they have enough fish in the trap the skiff comes around in a circle as the big boat 'reels' in the net which has now made kind of a basket in the water.  Then In comes the Salmon from the Seine.  In Seine Salmon!'

Alaskan Fact: Just north of Haines, on the Chilkat River over 4,000 Bald Eagles fly in from out lying areas and gather in the fall and early winter months for the late salmon runs there.  This makes this spot the largest concentration of Bald Eagle in the world.
